No, I’m not having my oil checked, thank you…

You know how sometimes someone confuses you with someone else? It’s kind of awkward especially when they mean well or they’re just trying to be friendly. You almost don’t want to correct them because of how embarrassed they’ll be when they realize their goof. Well last night I went to Hajime for my weekly omakase. It was kind of a slow night and there were nobody but regulars at the front of the restaurant. Since I knew all of them, it was kind of a sensory blitz walking in there because Julie-san was conspicuosly seated alone at table A-1, a waitress I had gone on a few dates with a long time ago was having dinner at a table with her mom along the wall on the right, the new cute young waitress was cleaning up a table behind them, and a Japanese couple whose names I forget were at the sushi bar in my usual spot. I said hello to the two waitresses first, then spun left and looked quizzically at Julie-san since she was alone at A-1, a table for 8. I only got a “hello” out of my mouth when the lady at the sushi bar leaned past her husband and stopped me in my tracks with this greeting- “Steve! Aren’t you having a colonoscopy tomorrow?!” So I went from looking quizzically at Julie-san to looking quizzically at her, and then at Sam. I walked over and sat down next to her husband and said “Not that I know of. I hope you don’t know something I don’t!” There’s about 5 different Steves, Stevens or Stephens that are regulars at Hajime, and somebody, probably either Julie-san or Sam had told the wife that “Steven” was having a colonoscopy the next day. Turns out she had me confused with another Steven who is probably north of 70 years old. Talk about an oops!

  1. Sonia, I think you’ve been living too close to those retirement communities down there in Florida! We younger folks like to keep that tunnel Exit Only!
