Thoughts on my Vegas experience so far…

Gosh, so much has happened in just a few days here so far that I feel like I am way behind in blogging everything. I really should write a blow by blow recap of the whole wsop experience and maybe I will at a later date, but for now, I think I should spew out a few of my random thoughts and observations before I forget them. So here’s what comes to mind in no particular order…

It’s frightening to think that I could function on going over 24 hours without eating anything other than the olives in my bloody mary’s. But since I have that genetic thing where I turn red when I drink, I think I am pretty much immune from ever being a true alcoholic. Good thing since yesterday was quite the bender. Gambling all day and sucking back the free drinks like they were water. I never felt hungry either, and I don’t know if it was because of the alcohol or maybe it was because I probably ate an entire jar of olives that day. I seriously must have had about twenty bloody mary’s. To borrow one of V’s favorite lines “Is that bad?”. I am actually quite surprised I did not pass out. However it did have its effects, but sorry, you get no details here, because as they say, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

The Imperial palace is one fun place I must say. With their musical impersonators, it is cheesy to the highest degree but just so campy that I can’t help but love it. It really is a grimy run down low class joint, but the cheese factor puts a smile on everyone’s face. The guy impersonating Lionel Richie was especially fun(ny).

One amazingly shocking thing you’d never expect to happen at the WSOP- one of the decks we started playing with had cards of two different color backings! The subtle design on the back made it quite hard to notice, but someone picked up on it- we had some cards with a red patterend back and others with blue. Probably cards that got damaged over the first 40+ events of the WSOP were replaced without checking to match the backs of the cards as well as the front, i.e. someone replaced a 5 hearts from a blue deck into a deck that had red cards to begin with. Pretty shocking for the biggest event in poker.

That aside, it was also quite shocking that they started more or less on time. Every tourney I’ve ever been to always ends up starting a little late. The fact that they could get 2200 people started at 11am was amazing.

The lamb chops at the Italian restaurant here at TI are really terrific. The beef carpaccio is rather flavorless though.

I bought new glasses, both regular and sunglasses, from Lunettes in the Fashion Show mall. I will probably be able to pick up the regular glasses before I leave, but the sunglasses will be shipped to me.

The Red 8 restaurant in the Wynn has dim sum, won ton noodle soup, and jook. They were all so-so except for the jook which was not up to par; it was tasteless and the thousand year old egg was strangely firm and also flavorless.

The sushi at Okada in the Wynn is really good. There’s an outdoor seating area which needs to be specially reserved, but the setting out there is pretty incredible.

My sleep schedule is completely messed up. I’m writing this at 4:42am Vegas time, and I’m not even sleepy. That frightens me a little bit.

On that note, I think it’s time to try to go to sleep anyway…
