Hwe Moo Chim

Doh! I can’t believe I fogot to mention my greatest recent food discovery in my last post! You already know I have a love for sushi. You probably also know my love for Korean food because of it’s spicy and sweet characteristics. Well two weeks ago I went to my usual Korean restaurant up here in Westchester, Kalbi House. While it can’t quite compare with Korean restaurants in the city (esp. Cho Dang Gol) they do very solid execution of my usual Korean favorites- kalbi, kimchi jigae and kalbi tang, so that’s what I usually order. This time however, I wasn’t feeling up for the usual stuff so I studied the takeout menu for a while and then decided to go with something I had never tried before- raw fish in a spicy sauce with vegetables. On the menu it was listed as Hew Moo Chim, but I’m assuming it should be Hwe Moo Chim since all the menu items with raw seafood elements had “hwe” in the name, plus I’m very familiar with Yook Hwe which is the delicious Korean version of steak tartare- finely sliced strips of raw beef served with a raw egg and julienned fruit of some sort, usually apple although Asian pear is probably my favorite variation. Anyway, it sounded right up my alley so I ordered it and boy was I ever right! It’s made with that hot and slightly sweet red sauce that you find in all sorts of Korean dishes. Succulent generous slices of raw fish and veggies were so perfectly matched to the heat of the sauce. Especially good were the fattier varieties of sashimi, such as salmon, because the richness of the fish really benefitted from being tempered by the spicyness.

In any event, think that’s what I’m gonna have for dinner tonight. Gotta try to squeeze in a quick workout when I get home, then get my hwe moo chim and then it’s time for tv’s best night of prime time programming. Tonight is the David Blaine special, which I only feel like catching because K told me she was filmed on the street as an onlooker watching Blaine do his street magic. I can only catch the first hour though, because then it’s time for 24, followed by No Reservations (re-airing the Osaka episode tonight, woo hoo!) and of course finishing with The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Man I love Mondays!

  1. I found this post searching for hwe moo chim from google. I tried it in Seoul and it was love at first bite.

  2. Thanks for the comment Brian. Yeah, it’s an awesome dish. Surprised it’s not more common considering this is clearly Korean cuisine’s answer to sushi and New York foodies definitely love their raw fish. I’d love to visit Seoul to try it there.
