Dammit! Just when I thought I was so lucky (*clap clap*) that I had escaped completely unscathed by the recent tornado two weeks ago and giant thunderstorm (possibly a 2nd tornado) last week, this morning brought evidence that I had not been as fortunate as I had thought. As I was brushing my teeth, I heard a sound from behind me that I recognized all too well from my many years of living in rental apartments, a sound I thought I would not have to hear again for quite some time since my condo is brand new. It was the slow irregular intermittent sound of water droplets dripping onto my tub, click…, click…, click… I calmly finished brushing my teeth, turned around, took a deep breath and pulled open the shower curtain to see what was up. Sure enough, there was a water stain on the ceiling with the paint bubbling out and a droplet of water hanging off, ready to come splattering down. Along the seam between the ceiling and wall there was more evidence of water stains, and along one wall was the ugliest paint bubbling I’ve ever seen. It looked like multiple long horizontal bubbles had formed and each began sagging independently as it filled with water. The result resembles rolls of fat like you’d see under the chin of someone morbidly obese. Ugh. So I called my superintendent who went off to investigate and discovered that it was caused by a leak in the roof. For it to have reached my bathroom means that the damage must be pretty extensive since the water had to make it through the 8th floor first. The superintendent sounded concerned and flustered. Me? I’m not sure what I’m feeling. It’s a strange mix of worry and disappointment. My oh so perfect condo now has a flaw in it that will require some as yet unknowable amount of inconvenience and cost to fix. Hrmph… So this is what homeownership is like… 🙁
