Going Blind at The Taj

Played the Click2Asia tourney at the Taj today. I think there were about 400 entries or so but I’m not sure since I showed up about 45 minutes late (I just figured if I showed up within the first hour in order to make a rebuy, I’d be good to go). In terms of organization and moving things along, the people running the tourney did a really good job from what I could see. The blind structure was a bit unusual though. We started with 1500 in chips ($70 buy in), and could rebuy another 1500 for just $40, so most people were around 3000 in chips to start with presumably. Since I showed up late I don’t know what blinds they started with, but by the time the first hour of play was over and they made last call on rebuys, there was already a $25 ante and the blinds were $100-$200. I guess it’s understandable since The Taj probably wasn’t making much hosting the tourney so they wanted to get us out of there as fast as possible. But geez, they could have been a little less obvious about it! I don’t think I’ve ever seen an ante in the first hour of a tourney like that. Anyway, to make a long story short, I didn’t get any cards to start and as the blinds shot up I had to make a move so I loosened up a bit, played really well by my standards, and then busted out with 8 tables left. Player to my right opened all-in with about the same size chip stack as me. I took my time calling with my pocket Kings because I really didn’t mind drawing some more callers after me. Managed to get one more call from one of the biggest stacks at the table. Since two of us were all in, we all showed our hands preflop: my KK vs 44 (to my right) vs AQo (big stack). I felt like I was going to take it down right there; everything seemed to be going right for it. I was playing well, had clawed my way up from survival mode, and it looked like the stars had aligned for me to triple up putting me in good position with only about 75 players left. But lo and behold a 4 came on the flop and just like that I was done. That’s poker.
