March Madness

I have to admit, I haven’t followed NCAA basketball at all this season. I think maybe I tuned out for good after the collapse and ignominy of the St. John’s basketball program under Mike Jarvis (I was a St. John’s fan growing up, and a Mike Jarvis fan because he coached BU during my years there). But I decided to follow one game and one game only during this year’s March Madness, Vermont vs. Syracuse. The Catamounts were a nothing team during my years at BU and the start of the America East conference. But earlier this year I read a few things about this year’s squad. A bunch of hard working nobodies from nowhere, under a real down home Vermont coach. Couple that with the fact that I’ve always hated Syracuse and Jimmy Boeheim’s nerdy coaching mannerisms, and I had a bit of interest in the game. And even better, I managed to make a bet with Jones; he took Syracuse and gave me 9 pts! So how sweet it was when the game turned into a defensive battle, ultimately going into overtime and finally with Vermont coming out on top by 3! It was only 20 bucks, but how sweet it is. Serves Jones right; no way a St. John’s alumn should ever bet on Syracuse, just on principle! After the game I played some online poker which has been going extremely well for me lately. Time to build up a bankroll so I can start playing some WSOP qualifiers.
