Today was the first official day in the new office. It’s definitely nice to be working there but I am f-ing exhausted. The last three days of planning, packing, coordinating, configuring, unpacking, setting up and overcoming technical challenges has been brutal. Funny, up until this week I had gotten to the point where I would think back on my old Thomson datacenter years as the good ol’ days. You know, all the long thankless overtime hours solving problems nobody else could figure out, and coming out feeling like you saved the world each time, just so the machines or the networks would be up and running by the next workday. Well after the last three days, I now remember all the negatives about it. Walking around in a daze from being so tired, the anxiety of not knowing if a problem is even solvable, getting covered in dust and grime from pulling cables and hauling equipment all over the place, and of course the one other thing that still has not changed after all these years- having to wait for machines to reboot or for their network requests to timeout before you can do anything on the console. And maybe I’m a bit jaded now too, because even though we’re up and running successfully now, I certainly don’t get that rewarding feeling of accomplishment like I used to. Oh well. On the bright side, the free coffee at the new office is actually pretty good, and I just confirmed today that the garage parking is free for us 24/7 x 365. The reason that’s so mint is because we’re right across the street from The Westchester and during x-mas shopping season, the parking at the mall is simply impossible I’m always thinking ahead 😉
